Our objectives for our Cub Scouts in this event are as follows:

  2. Using hands-on experiments to learn scientific concepts (e.g. friction, kinetic energy, and factor(s) which influence speed).
  3. To promote creativity and innovation using a fun-filled approach.
  4. Encourage teamwork, problem solving and communication among our Cub Scouts.

To prepare for the derby, this is what each pack needs to do:

  3. Cub Scouts may do research online for ideas, but be creative and be bold enough to create your own 3R cars working together.
  4. View the two video links below for ideas and inspiration.

Important:

  • Please remind your Cub Scouts to always be careful and be safe when handling any material for their project.
  • Avoid using pen knife or any sharp objects. Engage adults’ assistance if they need to use any items which may be dangerous to them.

Derby Competition Rules
A. The Longest Travelling Car

  1. On event day, each team will bring their 3R car (completed project) to the derby venue. Each team will be given a car code (e.g. 01 à Team 01 and so on).

  3. At any one time, there will be between 5 and 10 3R cars at the start line.
  4. There will be two lines marked as shown at the illustration below. The space in between the two lines (about one metre in width) is to be used by the participants to roll their 3R cars forward or alternatively propel their 3R cars forward using other methods (no readymade kits allowed). This would mean that the participants can only roll or propel their 3R cars from within the space (in between the two white lines), so that every racing car will start at approximately the same start line. Any 3R car that starts outside the two marked lines may be disqualified.
  5. Service Scouts will be assigned to each lane and issued with a measuring tape. They will be measuring the distance from the start line to the front part of the racing car. The distance travelled will then be recorded by the Service Scouts for each lane.
  6. Service Scouts will be assigned to each lane and issued with a measuring tape. They will be measuring the distance from the start line to the front part of the racing car. The distance travelled will then be recorded by the Service Scouts for each lane.
