INTRODUCTION TO STUDENT LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE WORKSHOP

The National Training Team (NTT) invites all leaders to sign up for the above-mentioned course.

Student Leadership Challenge is a framework to help leaders to develop and evaluate their youths. Leaders will be introduced to The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership Model and how it helps youth leaders to be at their personal best. It turns the abstract concept of leadership into easy-to-grasp practices and behaviours that can be taught and learned by anyone willing to accept the challenge to lead. INTRODUCTION TO STUDENT LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE

Eligibility: Adult Leaders
Course Fee: $50 (subjected to prevailing GST charges)
Course Subsidy: Full attendance is required for partial subsidy with MOE Uniformed Group (UG) Grant; no-show fee of $150+ applies.
Attire: Comfortable active wear with covered shoes
Class Size: 12 (min) to 40 (max)
  1. Upon confirmation of registration, no withdrawal will be allowed once invoice is generated unless the organiser cancels the event.

Course Write Up:

The Student Leadership Challenge (SLC) Workshop shares information on the well-known Student Leadership Model, focusing on how we motivate our youths to mobilise others to want to get things done. It’s about the practices that leaders use to transform values into actions, visions into realities, obstacles into innovations, separateness into solidarity, and risks into rewards.

Grounded in over 30 years of extensive research, Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner have identified The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership that are common when leaders are able to make extraordinary things happen.

This workshop shares how the Adult Leaders and Teachers can use the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership to inculcate in their Scout programmes and Youth Movement today.

Who is it for?
Adult leaders or unit leaders:

  • Those who aim to utilise and experiment the SLC model for their youth leadership tier, ie for the Patrol Leaders’ Council or the Sixers’ Council
  • Those running group level camps/activities that involves youth empowerment and decision
  • In charge of running Area level youth training courses

SKILLS AND FUNDAMENTALS (SNF) ASSESSMENT 2023

Dear Leaders,

We are pleased to inform that the Skills and Fundamentals (SnF) Assessment for 2023 is now open for registration.

The SnF Assessment is a prerequisite for participants attempting the Venturing Challenge Course (VCC). Candidates will need to fulfil the course requirements (Annex A) and will be assessed on their core Scouting skills (Annex B).

Successful candidates’ eligibility to attend the VCC will be valid for 1 year, or the equivalent to 2 intakes of the Venturing Challenge Course, whichever comes first.

Please refer to Annex A for more details on the upcoming SnF Assessment dates and Annex B for SnF assessment criteria.

  1. Unit Leader is required to register1 the Venture Scout(s) via MSDS Youth Programme Registration Portal:http://intranet.scout.org.sg. Accepted registrations will be notified.

  3. A briefing session will be conducted for all eligible candidates. The briefing session is mandatory. It will be conducted online, and the details will be shared in due course. Leaders are encouraged to attend the briefing.
  4. Upon confirmation of registration, no withdrawal/refund will be allowed once invoice is issued unless the organiser cancels the event. Hereof, the Singapore Scout Association reserves the right to cancel/postpone the event and reject applicants where necessary

1. By registering the Venture Scout, the Venture Scout Leader is deemed to have acknowledged the completion of the Trekker Award Criteria for the said Venture Scout.

Broad Assessment Areas

The SnF Assessment is a summative assessment and candidates are expected to achieve above average performance to pass. The assessment comprises both theoretical and practical components. The areas of assessment are as follows:

  1. Camping and Campcraft – Candidate will be tested on their skills and knowledge of camping and campcraft through demonstration of gadget tying and real-life scenarios during camping.
  2. Outdoor Exploration and Expedition – Demonstrate good understanding of the principles of navigation and exploration. Be competent in executing skills required in this area.
  3. Knotting and Pioneering – Demonstrate good understanding of the principles of knotting and pioneering including materials type, care of materials and characteristics of materials. Be competent in the various categories of knots e.g. whippings, lashings, rescue knots, etc.
  4. Outdoor Cooking – Candidate will be tested on their skills and knowledge of outdoor cooking and backwoodsman cooking. This includes fire-starting, choosing of pit, food preparation and nutrition planning.
  5. Scouting Fundamentals – Be well-versed with the fundamentals in Scouting knowledge such as history of Scouting,
    key policies, and characteristics of Scouting.

More details on the syllabus and materials/equipment required will be provided to the candidates
after registration is accepted.

  2. Current registered members of SSA,
  3. Nominated by the Group Scout Leader or Scout Leader, and endorsed by the Sponsoring Authority.

SOUTH AREA CUB SCOUT LEADERSHIP COURSE (CSLC) 2023

Greeting from South Area!

After three years of the pandemic due to COVID-19, we are pleased to inform you that this year South Area will be conducting a physical CSLC.

This year’s CSLC will be run as a residential camp over 3 days and 2 nights and will cover topics such as Leadership, Effective Communication, Ceremonies, First Aid, Conflict Management and Teamwork.

Through this CSLC, Cub Scouts will:

  1. Learn the basic skills and knowledge of being a leader
  2. Develop skills such as teamwork, conflict management and effective communication needed for their appointment as a Sixer; and
  3. Build friendship amongst their Sixes and other Packs and actively help each other to achieve team goals in an inclusive manner

Self-run CSLC

As communicated before, units who intend to run CSLC on their own may continue to do so. They will have to inform their intentions and course dates by the 1st quarter (by 10 March 2023) via email Ms Valerie and Mr Madhan. Upon completion of the self-run course, unit leaders are to notify the Area Admin via email. Units are required to register all participants under the self-run CSLC on MSDS via this link: South Area CSLC 2023

Course fee of $2 per Cub, subjected to GST will be charged for badge and e-cert. The deadline for self-run intake registration is 1st September 2023. Cubs who area not register for the self-run course on MSDS will not receive the badge and certificate.

There will be no further extension of registration to support efficient back-end planning.

18TH SCOUTS OF THE WORLD AWARD – DISCOVERY WORKSHOP

18th Scouts Of The World Award – Discovery Workshop

Greetings from the Singapore Scout Association (SSA)!

A flagship initiative under WOSM’s Better World Framework, the Scouts of the World Award (SWA) provides young people with opportunities to face challenges of the future. It aims to empower and engage young people in taking actions of world importance based on the universal values of freedom, tolerance, equality, respect for nature, and shared responsibilities; criteria similarly identified by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. There are two parts to the SWA – the Discovery Workshop and a Voluntary Service project.

The Discovery Workshop exposes young people to global issues that our Earth and Country are facing using an experiential model – to ExploreRespond and Take Action.  Apart from raising awareness on our communities-at-large and rich natural heritage, the workshop seeks to equip youths with development, facilitation, and planning skills in preparation for their Voluntary Service projects.

Participants are required to achieve full attendance for all the modules.

To be eligible for candidacy, a Venture Scout must fulfil the following requirements:

  1. Pioneer Award Holder
  2. A Venture Scout who has reached 15 years old at the time of registration and not more than 18 years of age as of 31 December upon completion of the eligibility for Nomination of PSA.
  3. Registered member of the SSA
  4. Nominated by his/her own unit’s Venture Scout leader.

ADULT LEADERS TRAINING COURSES 2023

On behalf of the National Training Commissioner, we thank you for your valuable feedback. We have taken them into consideration to plan a series of courses to support your learning needs in running your scout unit for 2023.

 

Aligning to “Adult Leader 2030” announced by the Chief Commissioner, we have updated the Learning and Development Roadmap with focus on 4 types of courses necessary for scouters, namely Wood Badge Courses (WBC), Standard First Aid Courses (SFA), Youth Education and Scouting (YEAS), and core scouting skill courses (Skills). Please take note thatCertificate in Applied Outdoor Education (CAOE) Part 1 and Part 2 will be combined to form “Wood Badge Course (WBC) Basic, while Advanced Certificate in Applied Outdoor Education (ACAOE) will be renamed as “Wood Badge Course (WBC) Advanced”.

Greetings from the Singapore Scout Association (SSA).

The Akela Award is the highest award for Cub Scouts in Singapore. We are pleased to announce that the nomination for the Akela Award 2023 is now open for eligible Cub Scout and Special Needs Cub Scout Packs.

To be eligible for nomination, a Cub Scout must have completed the following requirements:

  1. All Progress badge awards – including the Gold Arrow Progress Award (Revised Criteria),
  2. Akela Award (Revised Criteria)
  3. Currently a registered member of SSA
  4. Nominated by the Group Scout Leader or Cub Scout Leader and endorsed by the Sponsoring Authority.

Do note that the Akela Award interview process and ceremony will be conducted at the Area Level.

SUBMISSION AND NOMINATION FOR AKELA AWARD 2023

Nomination Procedures

  1. Refer to the Standing Order to ensure nominee(s) have completed the necessary requirements.
  2. Register the nominee(s) via MSDS’s Youth Programme Registration portal: http://intranet.scout.org.sg by 1 Apr 2023, Sat (5.00pm).
  3. Upon successful registration, Area Admin will provide the details and google link for E-Submission. All submissions are to be completed by 16 Apr 2022 (5.00pm).
  4. All nominations must be registered by cut off dates and times. Late submissions will not be accepted.

3 17 Apr – 2 May 2023 Akela Award Interview and Holistic Assessment
Conducted virtually at Area Level.

Successful nominee(s) will be notified via email to their Leader 1-2 weeks before the interview.

Area will notify the Leader regarding the interview date & time.
4 27 May 2023 Interview Results

Successful recipient(s) will be notified via email to their Leader.

Teacher In Charge / Group Scout Leader will be notified via HQ
5 Area will advise date Receive Certificates

Awardees will receive their certificates and badges.

Certificates and badges to be collected from HQ / given at the ceremony
6 Area will advise date & time Akela Award Ceremony

Conducted face-to-face/virtually at Area Level.

Area will notify Teacher In Charge / Group Scout Leader about the ceremony date & time.
